Welcome to Number Sense Tutoring. My name is Michael Baskin and I help students learn to see math as a highly creative, flexible and intuitive subject. By learning to see numbers in a whole new light, all students can become confident high achievers in math. Yet it all begins with a deep and rich understanding of numbers. For it is with this deep understanding of numbers that students will be able to master higher levels of math such as Algebra, Geometry, Algebra 2, Trigonometry, and beyond.

Methodology
When you decide you’d like me to work with your child, the first step is to have your child complete the WRAT-4 assessment. The WRAT-4 is a research based and validated tool that measures an individual's ability to perform basic mathematics computations through counting, identifying numbers, solving simple oral problems, and calculating written mathematics problems. This becomes your child’s baseline and we can then begin to plan lessons based upon misconceptions or a lack of understanding of numerical concepts. Specific grade level lessons come from the whole brain, award winning JUMP Math from Toronto, Canada and the CPA (concrete, pictorial, abstract) approach from Singapore Math. At the completion of our time I administer the WRAT-4 a second time to check student growth.

Every child can learn math. The potential of the brain to grow is HUGE! Every learning experience can change a child’s ability. Yet too many schools are using outdated methods and fixed ability thinking!!! With the openness of a growth mindset your child will learn different ways of seeing numbers in an intuitive and natural setting. Without a strong understanding of numbers, students will struggle to comprehend higher level mathematics.
Mindset
Noted Stanford psychologist Carol Dweck has shown with a growth mindset and effort, children can grow their math ability. Persistence and encouraged mistakes results in the growth of new synapses and neural pathways in the brain. Turns out making mistakes is one of the most useful things kids can do to help make meaning in math when they learn what doesn’t work.
In Person & Online
No matter where you live, the Internet brings the us all closer together. Using the app join.me (free for you) we are able to see and talk to each other (your computer needs to have a camera and a microphone) and share my computer screen. On my screen I use SMART Notebook, the same software used in most schools across the country for their interactive whiteboards. In addition to the join.me app you will also need a computer or a tablet with a touchscreen and a stylus.
